JC

Entering her final year at Whitworth University, JC began preparing for her future. When she considered graduation, however, something clouded her excitement. JC’s school records all reflected her legal name, rather than the name that affirms her true self.

JC connected with Spectrum this fall and through our Gender Affirming Products Program (GAPP) was able to begin the process of legally changing her name. In May, JC will earn her Whitworth University diploma and because of the generous support of our donors, her diploma will say “JC” – her true name.

Today, JC is beginning to focus on applying for her first adult job, unburdened by the name she will list on applications. When you support programs like GAPP the impact goes beyond the $287 it costs to file a name change; it affirms an individual’s dignity and gives them the ability to thrive. Together we are building a community of confident, self-assured 2SLGBTQIA+ young people

Adrian

Adrian and his mom were exhausted by the numerous anti-trans bills, narratives, and fabrications circulating in the media this year. When Spectrum Center began hosting Rapid Response trainings, they immediately signed up – eager to put their frustration into action.

At only 16 years old, Adrian is using his voice to create positive change in our community. In April, with sweaty and shaky hands, Adrian walked up to the podium and asked the city council members to pass an ordinance protecting 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Spokane. Adrian spoke about his love for this city, his dream of living in a Spokane where all are protected, and his hope of one day building his own family in our beautiful community. The ordinance passed 5-2.

When you support advocacy programs you strengthen our movement and uplift the changemakers of our future. Programs like Rapid Response, Community Debriefs, and Skill Shares turn advocacy into action by empowering our community, building resiliency, and equipping 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and our allies to make a direct, meaningful impact.
